Cryonic Suspension

Een belangrijke bijdrage aan de geschiedenis van Cryonics is nu online: Ev Cooper's boek “Immortality: Physically, Scientifically, Now” uit 1962 verscheen kort voor het veel bekendere werk van Robert Ettinger"The Prospect of Immortality". Beide boeken werden in een kleine privé-oplage gedrukt, maar Ettinger's boek werd in 1964 uitgebreid en bijgewerkt en gepubliceerd door een uitgeverij (Doubleday), en zelfs vertaald in het Nederlands als "De Diepvriesmens". Van Cooper's boek zijn waarschijnlijk slechts 50 exemplaren gedrukt.

Ettinger trok zijn visie door in "Man into Superman", met meer transhumanistische ideeën.  Maar die veel van die ideeën komen ook voor in Cooper's boek uit 1962,  dat daarmee opvallend zijn tijd vooruit was.

Ev’s book not only discusses the use of cold to preserve patients in the hope of future resuscitation, a substantial part of his manuscript is devoted to reviewing different scientific means to achieve “physical immortality.” The author also anticipates a lot of other “futurist” topics like synthetic biology, transhumanism, mind uploading, and the singularity. De Society for Venturism bracht het boek opnieuw uit in 1989, maar nu is het, net als Ettinger's "Prospect of Immortality" ook online, dankzij Mike Perry, en dankzij Aschwin en Chana de Wolf, die het op hun Depressed Metabolismwebsite hosten, zowel in html als pdf formaat.
